WHO WE ARE

As is widely agreed, Human Rights refer to the “basic rights and freedoms to which all humans are entitled”. They are “international norms that help protect all people everywhere from any degree of political, legal and social abuses”. However, these rights that exist both morally and legally are violated by the very governments, which are expected to enforce them. As a result, denied and devoid of their basic human rights, citizens in different part of the world are living miserably.  The gross imprisonment, abduction, disappearance, tortures and summary executions of Ethiopians of all ages, women, peasant farmers, university professors and high-level professionals, journalists and politicians alike, by the ruling regime has enticed us to form SOCEPP Canada.

Solidarity Committee for Ethiopian Political Prisoners – Canada (SOCEPP-CAN) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization established to combat abuse of human rights in Ethiopia. SOCEPP-CAN has been legally registered and operating in Canada since 1995. It has been actively involved in campaigning for the protection of human and political rights in Ethiopia and the horn of Africa. In tandem with other campaigners, SOCEPP-CAN works to see a world where all human beings could live in harmony enjoying their freedom and exercising their rights without limitations.

Since its inception, SOCEPP-CAN has written innumerable letters and appeals protesting to human rights abuse in Ethiopia; has been participating in various Canadian conferences and meetings promoting Human rights protection. In cooperation with other civil society groups, we organize forums and discussion events to promote democracy, peace and stability in Ethiopia.

SOCEPP-CAN is a member of Canadian Peacebuilding Coordinating Committee (CPCC) and Ethiopian Canadian Citizens League (ECCL) and endeavors to educate and enlighten Canadians on issues of human rights in Ethiopia. We constantly inform and seek the support of the Canadian government and Members of Parliament in order to augment the human rights situation in Ethiopia.

This site is fully dedicated to creating awareness on the human rights situation in Ethiopia today.  We believe that this site (like many other human rights activist pages) will help individuals see how their fellow human being is treated by the very government that is supposed to protect them.  In addition to this, it will also help individuals as well as groups to contribute to the on going struggle for the respect of human and democratic rights in Ethiopia.
