PETITION TO THE CANADIAN HOUSE OF COMMONS:
We, the undersigned members of the Ethiopian-Canadian community and other concerned Canadian citizens, would like to draw the attention of the House of Commons to the ongoing human rights abuses in Ethiopia and, specifically, to the recent re-arrest and life imprisonment of Ethiopian opposition leader Ms. Birtukan Mideksa. Since her arrest on December 29, 2008, Ms. Mideksa has been held in solitary confinement and has been denied access to legal counsel and international human rights monitors, in contravention of international human rights standards. She is feared at high risk of torture and other ill treatment, due to the isolated conditions of her imprisonment.
THERFORE, we the petitioners respectfully request that the House of Commons stand with representatives of the United States and the European Union and call for the immediate and unconditional release of Ethiopian opposition leader and human rights defender Birtukan Mideksa and all other political prisoners.
